The Radclyffe family sold the hall in 1662 and it had a variety of uses. This story features in William Harrison Ainsworth's novel Guy Fawkes, written by the Manchester writer in 1842. Local legend has it that the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 may have been planned in the hall. The hall was the seat of the Radclyffe family.
